In this three hour workshop we begin with bookbinding basics; understanding about paper grain, it's integrity to the finished book, and getting acquainted with a small handful of tools you need for bookbinding in general.
Part of getting acquainted with creating pages for your book, you will take several larger size sheets of paper, and fold them into smaller and smaller sizes until we have the desired size for a book, creating deckle (hand-torn) edges for our pages - an essential beginning for any handmade book!
Professionally speaking (and as seen in these photos), we believe the buttonhole-stitch style of book lends itself better to guillotine edged pages, so as part of the ‘materials included’ will be 2 sets of book pages with smooth edges, so that we can focus on preparing the (handmade paper) cover & sewing of the book.
By the end of this class you will have one finished book, and a second set of pages to finish at home, with our very own (new & improved) instructional handout including charming step-by-step illustrations drawn by Emmy Kennett; our nimble shop assistant.
This binding style is wonderful to use a sketchbook, photo album, or journal. With the little window on the spine, it is great fun to alternate the colors of the signatures (pages). As well as, to make and give as a gift anytime of the year!
Tools for folding, scoring and cutting, including handmade paper cover, text pages, waxed linen thread, hand-dyed linen ribbon, are included in the cost of this class.
